May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As a mental health advocate, I thought it was important to share some statistics and discuss how using makeup can positively impact your mental health.
Good mental health is essential to overall well-being.
Each year, 1 in 5 women in the United States has a mental health problem such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, or an eating disorder.
Women with mental health conditions face unique challenges.
One of the most significant challenges is low self-esteem/self-image.
Low self-esteem tends to work in a vicious cycle with other mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. It's hard to say which comes first, only that the combination is both common and troublesome.
Improving your self-image takes time and requires you to change the way that you think about yourself.
There are many strategies that you can try but today we will discuss how you can use makeup to positively impact your mood and self-esteem.
3 Ways Makeup Improves Your Mental Health:
- Creativity- For many people, makeup is a creative outlet. It provides the ability to express yourself and focus on something positive. Being creative is a basic need that we all have as human beings it provides the ability to explore without limits. When we are allowed to be creative we find the time to be present with ourselves and to explore our capabilities leading to improved self-image.
- Improves Mood- Depression and other mental disorders can negatively impact your mood and your desire to carry out daily goals. Applying makeup may drastically improve your mood providing feelings of accomplishment, satisfaction, and enjoyment. I love the quote “ When you look good, you feel good.” Because it is proven that when one takes time to care for themselves physically they feel better mentally.
- Overcoming Negative Thoughts- Negative thoughts can become extremely overwhelming. They can lead to a downward spiral that can cause or worsen the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. Breaking the cycle of negative thinking can take time and effort, but the results can be life-changing. Learning different makeup techniques can be challenging and may cause you to experience negative thoughts. However, creating a makeup routine and trying new techniques is a good way to practice reframing those thoughts and becoming more self-aware.
Self-image is so important ladies because it determines your experiences here on earth. It impacts your decisions, relationships, and overall wellbeing.
